Ora Organic Superfood Protein

You already know how much I love Ora Organic's Omega-3 spray, aptly named Nothing Fishy Here. Click here for my review. Ora’s products are the kind that make you think,

“Why didn’t anyone think of this before?”

The company’s vision is so simple yet at the same time pioneering:

We make nutrients, not supplements. Nutrients come from food, not artificial chemicals. Supplements are typically made of synthetic chemical concoctions. Our products are sustainably sourced from food.

Which is why I love Ora’s Way Better than Whey Superfood Protein. I use protein powder almost every morning for my breakfast smoothie. Over the years I’ve tried many different brands, but never seemed to repurchase the same one because I’m the kind of person who’s always wondering if there’s a better option out there. But ever since I tried Ora’s Superfood Protein, I've been committed to it because, simply put, there's nothing better on the market.

Here's why I love it:

1. Nutritional profile: Because every ingredient comes from food rather than synthetic chemicals, you can actually read all the ingredients and recognize what they are. There are ancient seeds and grains:

Organic Sprouted Rice, Organic Pea, Organic Flax Seed, Organic Hemp, Organic Sprouted Quinoa, Organic Sacha Inchi, Organic Sprouted Amaranth.

And wild berries and greens:

Organic Acai Berry, Organic Blueberry, Organic Maqui Berry, Organic Blackberry, Organic Strawberry, Organic Spirulina, Organic Chlorella, Organic Kale, Organic Broccoli, Organic Wheat Grass, Organic Oat Grass, Organic Barley Grass, Organic Parsley, Organic Dandelion.

Every ingredient is organic, and you get 18g of protein per serving. Because the grains are sprouted they deliver all of the amino acids necessary to make up a complete protein.

2. Superfood boost: every serving also gives you a boost of organic superfoods like kale, acai, blueberries, spirulina, chlorella and wheat grass. It’s my nutrition insurance: even if I’m not able to eat a balanced diet throughout the day, I know that I had at least one nutrient-packed meal from my protein smoothie.

3. Taste: Ora has an in-house, trained chef who creates flavors that taste great rather than taste like they’re good for you. Ora's Superfood Protein has a creamy vanilla chai flavor that’s just sweet enough. It’s delicious on its own and mixes well with other flavors so you can create your own protein-packed drinks or foods. There’s no added sugar and the sweetness comes from stevia. Stevia is the only zero-calorie sweetener that’s safe, as opposed to aspartame (NutraSweet) or sucralose (Splenda) which have been associated with health risks. I know some people don’t like the taste of stevia, but rest assured that Ora’s chef got the formula just right - you won’t detect any bitterness or aftertaste.

4. No crap: Ora's Superfood Protein is free of dairy, sugar, GMOs, wheat, gluten, eggs, peanuts, soy, tree nuts, artificial colors or flavors, synthetic pesticides and synthetic herbicides.

Here’s how I make my morning smoothie:
a handful of ice cubes
8 oz cold water or almond milk
2 scoops of Ora Superfood Protein
2 cups of whatever greens I have in the fridge (a combination of kale, spinach, parsley, dandelion greens, or romaine lettuce)
1 cup frozen berries
1 tablespoon chia seeds

I throw everything in my Vitamix and blend until smooth. It makes a delicious, slushy drink that keeps me full until lunch time.

Why is plant protein way better than whey? Of course it's environmentally sustainable and doesn't involve animal agriculture, each of which merit their own articles. On an individual human scale there's the toxic baggage that comes with whey: whey protein is made from the unwanted scraps of cheese manufacturers. The dairy used comes from cows that are raised with synthetic growth hormones (rBST), antibiotics and genetically modified grain laden with pesticides. Also, whey is known to cause bloating and allergic reactions.

Who wants a shot of growth hormones, antibiotics, pesticides, bloating or allergies in their smoothie? Not me. I'll take my plant-based protein please.
